Track Readings For Australia Racing

FAST	A Hard galloping surface which results in horses producing fast times
GOOD	A dry, well grassed course which is the desired option for most gallopers and punters alike
DEAD	A slightly wet track - not fully dried out.
SLOW	A rain affected track
HEAVY	Very wet, muddy and slippery. Severely effects the chances of horses who don't like getting their feet wet.
Penetrometer	A special device that is used by the course manager to measure the firmness of the racing surface.

Types of Races run in Australia
The following lists the classes of races - from the lowest class through to the highest quality races.

Maidens Country	Low class horses racing at country venues - Monday and Friday races are normally much weaker than other days.
Maidens Provincial	Horses without a win and running at Provincial meetings - Tuesday, Wednesday,Thursday Provincials are about even
Class 1 Provincial	Restricted Race - restricted to one career win.
Class 2 Provincial	Restricted Race - restricted to two career win.
Class 3 Provincial	Restricted Race - restricted to three career win.
3YO 1 Metropolitan Win (Midweek)	A midweek city race -Restricted to horses who have won only one metropolitan midweek race.
Class 4 Provincial	Restricted Race - restricted to four career win.
Class 5 Provincial	Restricted Race - restricted to five career win.
SC Special Conditions (Midweek city)	Special handicapped races for midweekers - restricted by a number of city wins in the past year.
Class 6 Provincial	Restricted Race - restricted to six career win.
Mares (Midweek City and Provincials)	Special races for fillies and mares
Welter (Midweek city and Provincials)	Unrestricted races - no win restrictions - better horses normally engaged - can be Handicapped, or Set Weights Races
Flying (Provincial)	Unrestricted races - no win restrictions - better horses normally engaged - can be Handicapped, or Set Weights Races
Open (Provincial)	Unrestricted races - no win restrictions - better horses normally engaged - can be Handicapped, or Set Weights Races
Open (Saturday and Holiday)	Unrestricted except by age - much higher standard (more prizemoney) than midweeks. Sprint and distance events.
Group Races	Better quality Open events - semi classic and classic races - WFA and Cups events. Group 1 is of a higher standard than Group 2 and so on.
Weight For Age Races	The horse's weight is determined by a horse's age. A very high quality race for elite gallopers. Fillies and mares get a weight allowance
